Free Marissa Alexander!

BOC received this letter from a local feminist socialist group called Radical Women. We’re endorsing Marissa Alexander’s fight against Florida’s minimum sentencing laws and more broadly against a racist and sexist criminal punishment system.

Please consider signing the online petition and writing Marissa Alexander a letter (more info below).

“The jury deliberated for 12 minutes before convicting her.” Despite the (ex) husband testifying on the stand that he would have put his hands on her if she didn’t have the gun. She faces a mandatory 20 year sentence with no chance at parole.

Stop the legal lynching by Florida’s mandatory minimum sentencing
laws of an African American domestic violence survivor

Dear Friend,

I am writing to ask you to do five things to support Marissa Alexander and help build a movement to defend this survivor of domestic violence, who is a victim of Florida’s Mandatory Minimum sentencing laws. clip_image002

Ms. Alexander was found guilty of aggravated assault for attempting to defend herself against her abusive husband. An African American mother living in Florida, Alexander fired a warning shot to back off her attacker. Though no one was hurt, she was denied a “stand your ground defense” and sentenced to 20 years. She had no prior arrests, was licensed to carry a gun and had a restraining order against her husband. The case is under appeal. Marissa is currently in a Florida State Prison. (You can find additional info, fact sheets, links to newspaper articles and more by clicking here.)

Below are five things you can do to make a difference:

1. Write to Marissa. This is an especially lonely time of year in prison. Send Marissa a holiday card and bring some warmth to this season.
